Understanding ANSI/SPRI ES-1

Abstract

Perimeter sheet metal is the first line of defense for your roofing system. Unfortunately, not enough attention is given to this integral roof component. Metal-Era’s “Understanding ANSI/SPRI ES-1” continuing education program addresses this important, but frequently misunderstood topic.

There are numerous benefits of adequate perimeter edge securement. It ensures that the large investment placed into a new roof system will remain intact as the building and the roof are exposed to high wind events. In addition, a well designed perimeter edge can prevent damage to neighboring buildings that are a result of roof edge failures.

The International Building Code requires adherence to the ANSI/SPRI ES-1 standard on all low sloped roofs. It is imperative that the commercial building community understands the standard and how it relates to the overall building envelope. Typical shop fabricated edge metal is not always fabricated to comply with this standard and our continuing education program helps the industry understand the difference between field or shop fabricated metal compared to a roof edge system that is built with strict adherence to the standard’s requirements. This presentation will help to better understand the ANSI/SPRI ES-1 document as well as the benefits of specifying an edge metal flashing that is performance tested to the ANSI/SPRI ES-1 method
